Products Description
When installing wood baseboard moulding, here are some common mistakes to avoid:
1. Inaccurate Measurements
Under - estimating the Quantity: One of the most frequent errors is not purchasing enough moulding. Failing to account for waste due to cutting mistakes or additional lengths needed for miter cuts can lead to shortages. It's essential to measure the perimeter of the room accurately and add at least 10 - 15% extra material.
Not Measuring for Level and Straightness: Ignoring the level of the floor and the straightness of the wall can result in a baseboard that looks crooked. Before installation, use a level to check for any slopes or dips in the floor and make sure the wall is plumb. If these factors are not considered, the baseboard may not fit properly and can create an unappealing visual effect.
2. Poor Cutting and Fitting
Incorrect Miter Cuts: Incorrectly setting the miter saw angle for corners is a common problem. For outside corners (where two walls meet at a 90 - degree angle), the miter saw should be set to a 45 - degree angle for a proper fit. Inside corners can be more challenging. Using the wrong miter angle or not making precise cuts can lead to gaps or misaligned corners.
Not Using the Coping Method Correctly (if applicable): Coping is an effective way to get a seamless look at inside corners. However, a common mistake is not cutting the profile accurately with a coping saw. If the coping cut doesn't match the shape of the square - cut end of the other piece of moulding, it will result in a visible gap or an uneven joint.
Failure to Test - fit: Skipping the test - fit step can lead to problems during installation. Without a test - fit, you may not notice issues such as the moulding not lying flat against the wall or floor, or there being small gaps that could have been corrected before nailing the moulding in place.
