The main difference between S4S and S2S and S3S is the degree of surface finish:

S2S (Surfaced Two Sides): This type of lumber is planed on only two sides, usually adjacent, while the two side faces remain rough. This means that after the S2S lumber is passed through a jointer to create a flat surface, it is passed through a planer to create a second side that is perfectly parallel and flat.

S3S (Surfaced Three Sides): S3S lumber is similar to S2S lumber, with two flat surfaces, but in addition has an additional side that is planed straight. This is often referred to as SLR1E (Straight Line Ripped One Edge) or Straight Line Ripped One Edge.

S4S (Surfaced Four Sides): S4S lumber has two planed sides and two planed straight sides, resulting in all four sides being perfectly square, flat, and parallel. This type of lumber can usually be found in most consumer hardware and DIY stores.

In summary, S4S lumber is planed on all four sides, while S2S lumber is planed on only two sides and S3S lumber is planed on three sides. S4S boards are often used in carpentry and construction projects that require precise dimensions and smooth surfaces due to their pre-treated properties.
