The main application of shoe molding is to create the interface between the skirting board and the floor. The shoe shapes have the same 90-degree angle on the back as a quarter round, but instead of having a perfect quarter radius, their profile is more like a squat.

Today, the main aim of the baseboard is to conceal the less appealing transitions between the baseboard and the floor, such as the unevenness of the baseboard.
