At its simplest, the mouldings hide and help seal the natural seams created during the framing of the building structure. As decorative elements, they are a way to apply light and dark shaded stripes to structural objects without changing materials or applying pigments. Depending on their function, they may be mainly a method of hiding, sealing, sealing, pure decoration or a combination of the three.
