Trump Hints at Canceling New Tariffs on China; U.S. and Chinese Markets Surge

According to U.S. media reports on October 14, President Donald Trump hinted on Sunday (local time, October 12) that he may cancel the newly announced tariffs on Chinese imports.

On his Truth Social account, Trump wrote, "Don't worry about China. Everything will be just fine!"-a statement widely interpreted as a sign he might not follow through with the tariff threats.

Following the news, both U.S. stocks and Chinese assets saw significant gains.

Just last week, Trump had abruptly announced that the United States would impose a new 100% tariff on Chinese imports starting November 1. He stated that this would be in addition to existing tariff levels. At the same time, he also declared that the U.S. would impose export controls on all key software from the same date.

In response, China criticized Washington's approach, saying that "threatening others with excessive tariffs is not the right way to engage with China."

Beijing urged the U.S. to "correct its mistakes as soon as possible."

China's position on the tariff issue has remained consistent: We do not want a trade war, but we are not afraid of one. If the United States insists on acting unilaterally, China will "take firm and necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests."
